How to avoid telemarketers

As far as I know, there are only two ways to get rid of telemarketers. Either scare them, or prank them. I will list the scare tactic here.

Do Not Call Register – Registration check results

You have requested to check the following numbers.

* ##########

We can not find a record of ########## having been submitted by the email you just provided. This may be due to any of the following reasons:

* the number was initially submitted with a different email address.
* the number was initially submitted using our automated telephone service.
* the number is not currently registered.

You can register numbers on the Do Not Call Register at www.donotcall.gov.au, or by calling us on 1300 792 958.

Thank you,
The Do Not Call Register

As you can see, all you have to do is to put your phone number in the Do Not Call register (available both in America and Australia). Now of course, everybody likes doing the FUN way.

When a telemarketer calls, quickly retrieve this page: http://www.xs4all.nl/~egbg/english/counterscript.pdf

Of course, it would waste a lot of your time, but you’re having fun. It’d be no use sending your information to the Netherlands, by the way.

Just ask them the questions they normally ask you.

To whom am I speaking? Could you spell your name for me please?

Could you tell me how you found this phone number?

Is this your full time job?

What else do you do for a living?

How long have you been in the telemarketing business?

How much do you earn?

Thank you for your information, would you mind giving me your phone number in case I need additional information?

For the full script, download the pdf. You’ll also learn how to get the conversation back on track if the telemarketer doesn’t co-operate.

I would personally just do use the counterscript way. Much more fun.

Why am I suddenly posting something like this? Simple. I read about it. Duh!

Or, if you don’t feel like doing that, you could always tell them that they’re on hold and let them enjoy an hour’s worth of your music collection. And a very pricey phone bill. Woot.
